Events Midnight Sun Film Festival

This is what brings many visitors here from far away in the south every summer. The Sodankylä film festival is one of the world’s most unique in terms of  atmosphere.

Midnight Sun Film Festival

Midnight Sun Film Festival is a world-renowned event in which famous directors, rising stars, an international audience and ordinary members of the public meet in an informal and warm atmosphere under the midnight sun and in the middle of the expansive Lapland nature.

The festival is characterised, above all, by a love of film. Stiff formalities and bureaucracy are conspicuous in their absence and the spirit of the event is relaxed and bohemian. Over the years the locals have come to prize the film festival as one of their favourite events. Directors, actors, visitors from the south and Lapland residents come together to enjoy films under the midnight sun.

Did you know? People have been watching films under the midnight sun in Sodankylä since 1986. Famous Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki is one of the founders of the event.

Films are shown in four locations near the town centre around the clock. Remember that in the summer in Sodankylä it doesn’t matter if it’s day or night, evening or morning – the sun shines in the clear sky twenty-four hours a day. In the town centre the restaurants and cafés also serve friends of the silver screen. In between films it’s worth not only to eat well but also go to swim on the beautiful Nilimella beach!
