The beautiful, violet and translucent amethyst is one of the best-known precious stones. In the Luosto area of Sodankylä, in Lampivaara and in Yli-Luosto, there are plentiful amethyst deposits.

Europe’s only active amethyst mine, Lampivaara, is in the Pyhä-Luosto National Park, in a beautiful spot on the slope of a fell. There, you can look for amethysts yourself and keep what you find. At the same time, you can enjoy the most beautiful Lapland nature in the middle of a protected ancient forest area. In the summer you can get to the mine on foot and in the winter on skis, on the Amethyst Pendolino or with a snowmobile safari.

There are also several souvenir shops in Luosto, where you can buy a Lapland amethyst for good luck. It is believed that amethyst calms the mind, making it a good meditation stone.
